Global information architecture

Structuring global websites

Global IA is the art and science of creating structure, labels and organization schemes for global information spaces.

Information architecture is de art and science of organizing information spaces, mainly applied to websites. Global IA is a subset of this.

Global IA topics include:
  • How to create a good global gateway for a website
  • How to translate a taxonomy
  • Locale switchers
  • How to approach the development of locales
  • How categories can be cultural

There is currently little research or information available on global IA.

Translating taxonomies

I'm not a fan of merely translating a taxonomy. It's more about setting up a parallel taxonomy with similar entries and categories, but based on the real-life terminology of a specific (business) domain as used by its audience. Multi-lingual analysis of the domain is therefore an absolute must.
