FriendFeed.com is a website allowing you to subscribe to updates from friends and, generally, people whose news you deem interesting. The site was started by a group of ex-Google employees in 2007 (though it now employs non-ex Google employees as well).
At FriendFeed, you can choose between two types of friends: actual friends (though they may not be real friends, as this is just FriendFeed terminology) and imaginary friends. An actual friend is another user to whom you have subscribed who has signed up to FriendFeed and added various activity feeds from other sites -- like their blog, Twitter, Google Reader, Digg, Picasa photo album and so on -- so that when they do something on one of those services, like publish a new photo album, you'll see an update on your "feed" (which is shown on the main FriendFeed home page once you're signed in).
An imaginary friend on the other hand is someone who may not be subscribed to the system, or who did not approve your subscription request, but for whom you define a set of activity feeds.
Added to activitiy alerts, FriendFeed also allows you to share quick links or messages with your subscribers/ friends.
One of FriendFeed's more interesting features is the ability to comment on any entry appearing in FriendFeed. Doing so may also expose the shared item to your friends who may not have subscribed to the original poster, thereby increasing the radius of discussion.
