The rule for French words in -al is changing -al into -aux when turning them into the plural form.
un animal, des animaux; un journal, des journaux; un bocal, des bocaux; un local, des locaux
but there are exceptions to this rule as well
the four most know are these:
un bal, des bals
un carnaval, des carnavals
un festival, des festivals
un récital, des récitals
the traditional listing of exceptions is
bal, cal, carnaval, cérémonial, chacal, festival, pal, récital, régal
and the adjectives
bancal, fatal, final, natal, naval
but these listings aren't exhaustive and some words have a plurals in -aux and in -als.
For the word banal in the plural there is a difference in the meaning:
banal (au sens médiéval [in the medieval sense])
un four banal, des fours banaux
un moulin banal, des moulins banaux
banal (au sens commun et moderne [in the commun, modern sense])
un mot banal, des mots banals
un incident banal, des incident banals
un propos banal, des propos banals
