Videos of clever animals

Dogs skateboarding, birds making tools, chimps playing video games, etc.

Many animals share human characteristics such as problem-solving and game-playing, and display various forms of intelligent behavior. Here are some videos that may surprise you.

Skateboarding dogs

Dogs who have learned how to skateboard seem to love it, and there are plenty of videos on YouTube of skateboarding dogs. I like this one, because the dog seems to enjoy "hanging out" with the other skateboarders:

Crows that make tools

Crows are resourceful birds who can make and use tools. In this video, the crow uses a wire to try to retrieve some tasty food. When this doesn't work, the crow bends the wire into a hook, and successfully uses that to obtain the food.

Chimps who beat humans at memory games

Young chimps can learn to count using digits, and they can remember where the digits are - even when the digits are just flashed for a fraction of a second. Humans don't stand a chance of winning this game!

Dog who improvised a boat

This dog wanted to retrieve a ball from a swimming pool, but didn't want to get wet. So it ran to the other end of the pool, jumped on a float, and paddled to the ball. Smart!

This cat can turn on the tap (faucet) to get a drink. I bet it doesn't ever turn it off again afterwards!

This chimpanzee has never been presented with this problem before, and uses lateral thinking to work out how to solve it and get the peanut.
