I earned my Ph.D. in English at Brown University, and teach here in Providence, Rhode Island. My research and teaching areas include Victorian literature, the history of Arctic exploration, and visual culture/early media studies. A couple of years ago, I appeared on an episode of PBS's NOVA, Arctic Passage: Prisoners of the Ice, about the lost Arctic expedition of Sir John Franklin. My book, Arctic Spectacles: The Frozen North in Visual Culture, 1818-1875, was published last year by the University of Washington Press. My hobbies and interests include hiking, biking, book collecting, and music.
I've had a longtime interest in the educational and communications potential of the Internet; I put up my first personal webpage in 1994, started a LISTSERV list in 1995, and opened my web museum of Arctic exploration in 1996. I've contributed to numerous web references (IMdB, the English Wikipedia, and Citizendium) as well as print ones (The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern World, The Encyclopedia of the Arctic). I hope to help get Knol off to a useful start!
