You will not like to hear it. You will hate to do something about it and it is really a very boring thing to do, but it is inevitable. You can’t be like this forever and help others milk your hard earned money for no fault of yours except for lack of information and lack of initiative. Debt is one those things that make you go crazy and do stupid things. Instead of coming out of it, we get into a vicious spiraling circle. Credit card debt is the devil and you will have to drive it out of your life. If you have credit card debt, it is almost impossible to achieve financial independence, but financial independence is what you want, don’t you? Here’s how you do it:
Have cards, will discard
How many credit cards do you have? Have you paid them up? If there are any you haven’t used yet -- cut and discard them. Now for part 2: if you have cards and have used them, pay them up and then discard them. How would you pay? Raise cash by doing some odd jobs here and there; run a junk yard sale or a garage sale; sell stuff on EBay - doesn’t matter how you raise cash -- just do it and get rid of those cards. Keep just one or two best cards (the ones that give you lots of money saving options and discounts) and these are to be kept for emergency.
Quell Temptations and Hold that buy for a week
Tremendous amount of effort goes into getting rid of debt and that’s why most people don’t want to do it. The choice is yours, but if you want to do something about it you need to instill a few golden practices first -- like allow yourself to be lead by the principle of delayed gratification. When you get that itch to buy something, hold it off for a week. Just force yourself out of the mall, get away from the shopping cart on that website and see if you can do without the buy. You will be surprised to see that more often than not, you can do without the purchase.
Cash is your Best friend, use it
Oh, you did the above mentioned “delayed Gratification” thing but you realized that you need to make that purchase. That’s good. It looks like the need is bad enough and now that you have to pay for it, act like you don’t have a credit card at all. Use a debit card instead. All merchants now have more options to make payments with than just a credit card (although it is the best -- for their reasons, not yours). Cash is the king for making payments. As long as you use the amount of cash you have in your wallet as the benchmark for purchases, you might never get into debt again. Cash has a way of telling you to not to buy something simply because you haven’t got the cash for it.
Budget Credit Card Payments
After having instilled some long-term “Never-get-into-debt” qualities in yourself, it is time you actually get out of the debt you have already made. It helps to sit sown with your mates, family, spouse or anyone you trust and actually write out a plan -- no, not on the computer. Do it on a paper that you can see everyday. Even a post-it note will do (a condensed plan?).Make a downright, honest expectations of your expenses and income each month and demarcate X amount of money which is much higher the minimum amount due on your card(s) to be paid out for the card(s). This should get you out of your credit card debt, over time. Remember not to make any purchases on these cards until the balance is zero. Once it is, head back to point 1 above.
Resort to Debt Consolidation
Sometimes, all of that effort still won’t pay off and it might seem like even budgeting is not helping. If this is case, you will need to up the ante. Press your foot on the accelerator. Look to consolidate this debt. Pick up a single loan and pay off all these minor loans. Seek out Local non-profit credit counseling organizations that can help you reduce your interest rates, negotiate with your creditors, and setup a budget to help you return to financial health. Information abounds on the Internet about these firms and there is enough for you to seek out loans all by yourself, if you wished.
Credit card death is like gangrene, it can debilitate your financial health to such an extent that a day might come when you need to cut out on your basic survival just to survive. The best thing to do is to never get into it, once you do, do something and get out of it.
