Introduction to University of Madras

Incorporated by an Act of the Legislative Council of India in 1857, the University of Madras was one of the first three Universities to be established in India.

The University is spread over four campuses- Chepauk, Marina, Guindy and Taramani-within the city of Chennai. It is engaged in teaching and research at the post-graduate and doctoral levels, having under its fold 70 Departments in all major disciplines, besides Institutes of Research recognised for higher level research.

The Institute of Correspondence Education established in 1981 offers the following courses of study through correspon­dence under the Regular Stream and the Open University System. The Regular Stream implies formal education with pre requisite educational qualification as applicable to the candidates seeking admission to the affiliated colleges and University Departments. The Open University System does not require pre requisite educational qualification; but it requires only the completion of 18 years of age as on lst july and a pass in the Entrance Test.

Eligibility for three year Degree Courses:

Regular Stream:

A) Admission to the first year B. A./B.Sc./B.Com./B.lit. B.B.A./B.C.S./B,B.M.

Degree Courses is open to candidates who have passed:

a) The Pre-Universiry Examination conducted previously by the

Un iversity of Mad ras.

b) The Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu in the Academic or Vocational stream and also should have a minimum gap o ftwo clear years. Tthe date of appearance in the examination in which the candidate has passed the S.S.L.C.(XStandard) and joining the first year of degree course. .

c) The Senior School Certificate Examination (XII Std.) . conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education held in 1979 or thereafter provided that they have been declared to have passed the examination in not less than five subjects of which English shall be one.

d)The Indian School Certificate Examination (12 Years) .conducted by the Council for lndian School Certificate Examination held in 1977or thereafter, provided that they have been declared to have passed In the examinarions in not less than subjects of which English shall be one.

e)Pre-Technical Examination previously conducted after 11 years of study conducted by the State Board of Technical education and Training, Chennai.

f) Intermediate Examination (two years) of Andhra Pradesh and Pre-degree Examination (two years) of Kerala and Pre-university Examination (two years) of Karnataka under the 10+2 pattern.

g! Candidates who have successfully completed 12 or 13

years of education in any state in India or abroad under 11 + 1

!0+2 or 11+2 pattern, subject to the approval by theUniversity.

h)Candidates who have successfully completed the Second year foundation Course of the Open University System of madhurai iKamaraj and Annamalai Universities.
i) Candidates who have successfully passed the Three year Diploma Examinations conducted by theState Board of Technical .Education and Training, Chennai after passing 10 th Std. examination

Candidates who have passed theG.C.E. (Advanced level/ Principal level) with not less than three subjects in the 'A' level with English in the'O'level/subsidiary level).

For B.C. A Course, candidates who have passed the Higher Secondary Examination or an examination accepted as equivalent thereto wiih Mathematics and/or Computer Science as one of the subjects alone are eligible for admiss ion. They should also have a minimum gap of two clear years between the date of appearance in the examination in which the candidate has passed the S.S.L.C.(XStandard) and joining the first year of degree course.

Note: Candidates who pass the supplemental examinations will not be considered for admission in that year.

OPEN UNIVERSITY SYSTEM (O.U.S.)

No formal Educational Qualification is prescribed. Candidates who shall have completed 18 years of age on the first of July are eligible fo rprovisional admission in the academic year. The provisional admission will be confirmed only on passing the Entrance Test after undergoing a Preparatory Course.

There are Two Schemes in the Open University System.

Scheme I: It is a three year course leading to a Bachelor's Degree.

Scheme-II (Credit System): It is a one year credit system which leads to a Certificate. Candidates who do not want to register themselves for a degree course but wish to acquire knowledge in any particular paper are permitted to join under the course prescribed therefore. On passing the examination, the candidates will be awarded a certificate of having earned one unit of credit.

Candidates are permitted to accumulate units of credits equal to the maximum number of written examinations pre­scribed for the branch of study in the Degree under the frame work of the regulations prescribed therefore, over a period of time and then awarded the Degree concerned. But no candidate will be permitted to offer more papers than that prescribed for each year of study for the three year degree course. In other words, each candidate will be required to spend not less than three years in the institute, not necessarily consecutive, to earn the degree.

The choice is limited only in anyone of the branches of study. That is he can choose papers in B.A. History or B.A. Economics or B.A.-Tamil or B.A.English or B A. Co-operation or BachcIor of Corporate Secretaryship or B.sc. Mathematics or B.Sc. Geography or B.Sc. Psychology or B.Com. or B.Lit. or B.B.M. or B.B.A. or B.C.A. He cannot choose one paper in B.Com. And another in B.A. English or in any other branches of study.
If any papers prescribed for the course under Credit System is/are not offered during that year, the candidates will not be permitted to write such papers.

Eligibility for M.A.,M.Sc. &M.Com. Courses

Candidates who have passed the three years Undergraduate degree courses of any University are eligible for admission provided they have qualified for the degree after undergoing eleven yearS.S.L.C.plus oneyear P.U.C. or ten years S.S.L.C. plus two years Pre-Degree/P. U.C. /Intermediate/Higher Secondaiy Eximination under the 10+2+3 pattern or other equiva­lent examination Viz.,

a) All India Senior School Certificate Examination of 12 years duration  I.S.C. Examination of 12 years Ore) The G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination with three subjects at the Advanced Level or Principal Level and Engiish at the Ordinary otr subsidiary level.

The fee required for application and prospectus is Rs.70/ - in Person and Rs. 100/- DD by Post.
