The point of this Knol is to offer practical suggestions that anyone can use immediately to write Knols or other projects for selling information, products, or services.  You can use the resources in this Knol to find clip art and public domain pictures to use in your own projects.

This Knol provides valuable information for those who want to write to make money.  This Knol is written to motivate and inspire those who are seeking to augment their income through writing.

This is an authoriative Knol because there is information that is valuable to those who want to write for money.  Anyone who is interested in making money knows this.

Googe allows you to write Knols to promote* your at home business or website.  It is not just for professionals and scholars sharing information,

It is completely legal to write a Knol promoting your at home business or website,  as long as you follow Google's specified guidelines.

Publishing a Knol is not just for medical doctors and professors who wish to showcase their accumulated knowledge.

Laymen may also have unique insights and expertise that is marketable worldwide on the Internet.

Everyone has had experiences that have taught him or her life lessons, which they can share on the Knol and teach others.  Thus anyone can start their at home business sharing their specialized knowledge and expertise.

Don't share your experiences as if you were writing a diary or blog; express your ideas and expertise from your life experiences or profession.

If you choose to allow Google to place ads alongside your articles, they will pay you for every ad  readers click on. (See Google Adsense for more information about getting paid.)

The key to making money with your Knol  as a home business is to make it so appealing to individuals that your Knol will appear as a top listing with the web search engines.  Your article must contain information and unique advice that lthe average Internet searcher could not find easily or quickly.

Give readers "inside tips" in your profession or area of expertise and you will make money in your at home business!  Don't make the mistake of sharing simple or commonly-known ideas. Your Knol then will not appear in the top search results.  If no one reads your articles, then none of Google's Adsense ads will be clicked on.  And the ads are what make you money.

For example, the other day I was talking to my friend, Amanda, at a local restaurant.  For over 15 years, she has worked as an academic librarian assisting students to find scholarly information in academic databases and on the Internet.

I suggested that she write a Knol in her area of expertise.

She said, "Stephen, what unique information could I possibly have to share by writing a Knol?"

"Amanda, you are a professional researcher, and anyone who wants to effectively search the Internet could benefit from your knowledge and experience."

"Stephen, I could write about the various databases I use, but all librarians know this basic information."

"Amanda, you are missing the point.  You are not writing to other librarians as if you were a scholar;  instead write to the millions of laymen who do not have any advanced experience in searching the Internet using sophisticated tools and procedures.

Use clip art from public domain sites to make your articles visually appealing and interesting to read. Images also give the reader's eye a welcome break from endless text.

Amanda, I write Knols that are simple and easy to understand, because I want to share my knowledge with those who are not experts in the insurance field.  You also want to share your knowledge with those who are "data challenged."

The Knol is a way to freely share your knowledge and expertise with world and get paid at the same time."

"You're right, Stephen!  I have a great idea to write on the Knol.  The new trend in searching the Web is to use 'metasearch' engines which access multiple search engines simultaneously."

"The fact is, the Knol is for anyone who wants to share a "unit of knowledge, Amanda.  They can share with other professionals such as medical doctors do, or they can share with the laymen unique ideas they may find useful.

Amanda, you can make your article visually appealing by using images and clip art from public domain sites. (See list of sites for finding free images at the bottom of this Knol.)  Using free, public domain sites in your Knols is one of the best kept secrets on the Internet.  Your articles will catche the reader's eye, and gradually earn you more money money with Google Adsence.

In addition, your article should be completely free of spelling and grammatical errors. This task is made easier by having your article read back to you with "Natural Reader Free Software" before you publish the Knol.  This is a great way to edit your writing.

Find "Natural Reader Free Software:"  http://www.naturalreaders.com/

You can download "Natural Reader Free Software" which allows you to listen to your articles before you publish on the Knol.  Experienced writers know that listening to their written words is one of the best editing tools available.

Always do a spell check on the entire Knol, including "My Bio."

You can also make your Knols more interesting by sharing your personal stories and experiences as a librarian that illustrate the lessons, ideas, and thoughts you are communicating with others around the world with these Knols.

Hint:  When you finish writing your Knol, you can rate your own Knol.  Give it a rating.  Your Knol will stand out  when viewers see this rating.  Do not leave your own rating blank as many inexperiences Knolists do.  You will find where to rate your Knol at the top of your Knol below where you write in your affiliation.  Also fill in your affilation as well.

Even after you publish your Knols, you can edit and make changes.  In fact, you even delete Knols that you no longer want.

Amanda, you can search Google Images using these key words, clip art "public domain" for locating free artwork to use in your Knol.  Then make sure that any clip art or pictures are in public domain, free for public use.

When you use key words in Google Images search box, you will find more images in public domain faster than doing a web search for these public domain images.

Google also allows you to place one New Yorker Cartoon in your Knol. (Check Google terms and polcies for complete terms and agreements.)  Follow the instructions when you click on "insert image" to insert a cartoon from the top of your Knol toolbar.  Here is an example of a cartoon that I inserted into this Knol:

Use New Yorker Cartoons to make your Knol interesting and entertaining as well as informative

Caution: Do not use any real pictures of individuals in your articles unless you have their written permission, even if the pictures are in public domain.

You can also use most pictures from the United States Government (www.usasearch.gov).   When at this site, click on images, and insert your keyword in the image search box such as "dog" and then click search.

This picture was found on www.usasearch.gov by clicking on "images" on this government website, and the inserting the word "dog" into the search box, and then clicking "search."

1st Great TIp: Use the Google Adwords Keywood Tool to choose the most popular words in your title to draw individuals to your Knol article.

Finding US government images and pictures

 using Google "Images" search

If you only want to search for pictures and images from the US Government in Google Images, type the following into your Google Images search box:

(name the image or key word) "site:,gov OR site:,mil"

Include all colons and commas exactly as I have typed them, or your       search will not locate the desired images listed by the US government.

For example: clip art site:,gov OR site:,mil
                            dog site:,gov OR site:,mil
                            boat site:,gov OR site:,mil

You type in the Google "Images" search box the keyword followed by:
    "site:,gov OR site:,mil."

Type this exactly "site:,gov OR site:,mil" following your keyword and
study the  examples.  Include the commas and colons exactly as shown.

Just because you find an image on government or military domains does not automatically mean you can use it free of charge.  You need to avoid images of people, US goverment logos such as NASA, and selected US postal images.

Make sure that you are not using an image that comes from a contractor working with the government.  If you see the word "copyright" you cannot use the image.  No copyright notice does not automatically mean the image is in public domain.

    See Wikipedia for more explantation:

2nd Great TIp:  Wikimedia Commons has thousands of images in public domain for your use:

Do not use works by contractors for the federal government, educational insttitutions, and state goverements becaue the images are copyrighted- even if there is no such notice given.

   From Wikipedia:
  (Pulbic Domain resources)

"Title 17 USC §105, Subject matter of copyright: United States Government works, provides that "Copyright protection is not available for any work of the United States Government," defined in Title 17 USC §101, as "a work prepared by an officer or employee of the United States Government as part of that person's official duties." Therefore, only those works solely authored by US Federal Government employees are not protected by copyright in the United States.

Works produced by contractors and grantees for the federal government are generally protected by copyright. In such cases, the Government is granted a nonexclusive, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free license in the work to reproduce, prepare derivative works, distribute copies to the public, and perform publicly and display publicly, and to allow others to do so, for U.S. Government purposes. The Government’s license does not place these works in the public domain. Additionally, a copyrighted work for which the copyright has been transferred to the Government by assignment or bequest is not in the public domain."

When various websites advertise "Royalty Free" photos, they are commercial enterprises selling their photos.  They are not public domain photos.

When you see "Royalty Free" images on a website, you are not at a public domain website.

You want to use clip art and pictures that clearly come from public domain sites.  Unless it is clearly stated that this picture or clip art comes from public domain, you should assume it is copyrighted, even if there is no copyright notice.

    From Wikipedia:
    (Pulbic Domain Resources):

"While use of a copyright notice and registration was once required as a condition of copyright protection in the United States, it is now optional, and a work is not in the public domain simply because it does not have a copyright notice."

In other words, even if some material does not indicate that it is copyrighted, do not use it unless it is clearly identified as as being in public domain.  This is the prudent way to use images, clip art, and photos."

"Stephen, this is great information.  Now I can write confidently about my unique life lessons, ideas, and knowledge.  I can make my articles visually interesting using pictures, cartoons, and clip art from public domain sites and the United States Government.  In addition, I could make money using Google Adsense.

"One final note, Amanda.  When you begin to see Google Adsence ads appear to the left of your articles,, do not click on them.  It is against Google's policies to click on these ads in your own written articles.  Also do not suggest in your articles that anyone should click on these Google Adsence ads.  it is against Google's policy to encourage any clicks."

"Stephen, I have just one last question about improving my copywriting skills to make money on the Internet. Do you have any more suggestions?"

"Yes, you can study what other well known copywriters do to make money on the Internet: Ray Edwards, Joe Vitale, Clayton Makepeace, Brett McFall, Frank Kern, and others.

For example, I have written a free e-book about far-infrared saunas using some of the principles taught on this Knol.  When you download the free e-book, notice how I have used pictures to pull readers into the text.  Notice how stories are used in a dramatic way, and how the information is emphasized with highlighted text."

Go to this website and download the free e-book to study an example of my copywriting on the Internet: http://activecarbonfibers.com

*Disclaimers:  You cannot promote any violence, hate, and pornography on your Knols. Refer to Google Knol for what is legal to write.  Be sure to check completely using any picture or clip art from public domain sites for copyright violations.  This is the most up-to-date information, and you need to check carefully that these public domain sites actually offer picture and clip art for public domain use.

Knol certification by authors

This knol is an authoritative article - Certification by Other Authors

Knol's main aim is to create authoritative articles about specific topics.

But the platform provides an opportunity for experimentation by authors to provide various formats. But unless the main objective is fulfilled to a large extent, Knol may not succeed in the first place to provide opportunity for other forms of expression by us (author community).

Therefore make an attempt to certify knols by any other author as an authoritative knol. If we can certify a great number of knols as authoritative articles we can make a noise about it in various forms of media. If we can't then we have to change our approach to creating knols. Start.

An interesting and useful article

EVen though there is a comment that says this is not an authoritative article, I feel there is an authority in it to make it useful to people who want to write knols and make some money as an home based income generating hobby. There is a lot of scope.
