Massages are a very personal experience and finding the right massage therapist can be an intimidating task.  These are some basic tips in finding a massage therapist.

The most obvious is ask people you know for a recommendation.  If you have had massages before, don't forget to also ask your friends what style of massage they get.  A recommendation for a light massage when you prefer deep is not going to work.

Second, ask health professionals.  If you go to a gym, the professionals there usually know several massage therapists.

Lastly, if none of those work, the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) has an online massage therapist finder directory.  The AMTA has basic requirements for it's therapists, so it's a great place to look.

What if you have never had a massage and don't know what to ask for?  Then you need to think in advance of what you are trying to achieve.

  • Are you looking to relax and destress?
  • Do you have a lot of tension and neck/shoulder pain?
  • Did you just participate in a sports activity and are in pain with tight spots?

Once you have answered those questions, match your goal with these descriptions of the common massage styles:

Relaxation / Swedish massage; this is literally a relaxation, soothing, "floating away and forgot the world" type of massage.  The massage strokes used are long, gliding strokes that aren't particularly deep.  This is great for everyone.  Another point is this is also great for seniors and people who are in alot of pain on a daily basis due to an illness.  When a body is overly taxed with pain on a daily basis, a soothing and comforting massage is perfect for helping ease the stress on the body.

The other commonly requested and performed massage is deep tissue / therapeutic massage.  This massage technique uses deeper, shorter strokes, often holding intense pressure on painful spots of the body to help the body "let go" the knots (trigger point therapy).  A good visualization is someone kneading dough very aggressively - a good deep massage therapist will work your muscles over like a good baker kneading dough.  This massage can be painful at times, but the reward is those painful, tight spots in your body are gone afterwards.  In other words - relief!

Following the two definitions above, you won't go wrong in finding the right massage, and massage therapist, for your first experience.
