Orlando Vacations in the Summer Time

What you need to know about Orlando summers.

Taking a vacation in Orlando FL during the summer? Here are handy tips to make your stay more pleasurable.

Orlando Florida is a great place for family vacations and business conventions.  The metro Orlando area has an incredible diversity of offerings from entertainment to lodgings.  However, there is one thing many visitors don't realize when coming here.  Our summers are the equivalent of the north's winters - nasty!  Yes, we have our beaches and fifty million pools, but unless you are prepared, you can get hurt in our summers!  Read below on how to have a safe and wonderful metro Orlando summer vacation.

Our weather; the summer time is hot, humid and wet.  A typical summer day is:
  • AM - warm, muggy with sunshine.
  • Noon to 2pm - hot and glaring sunshine (the moisture in the air creates a glare)
  • 3pm-6pm - typically severe thunderstorms with lots of rain
  • 6pm-rest of the evening - warm and muggy except for when the sun the sun is setting there is usually a lovely breeze.

How do you prepare for this:
  • Sunblock - An spf of 30 is usually sufficient.
  • Sunglasses - protect your eyes from the glare, a necessity here!
  • Hat - additional protection from the sun's rays and to help keep cool.
  • Umbrella - pick up cheap ones at a dollar store (not in the tourist trap zones), that way if you lose it you won't be upset.
  • Rain coats - dollar stores are a great place for this and are the same quality as what you will get in theme parks.
  • Water - drink lots and lots of water to rehydrate.  To save money, pre-buy bottles of water at a discount mart and store them in your hotel / vacation home.
  • Plan on siesta's during the middle of the day.  From 1pm-3pm is the hottest part of the day here.  Plan on after lunch taking a nap or at least being inside away from the heat.  In addition, since there is usually rain from 3pm-6pm, plan on other indoor activities as well.
  • Lastly, bug spray.  We have lots and lots and lots of mosquitoes.  Save yourself some misery and buy some to keep on hand at all times.  Once the sun starts setting, the mosquitoes start coming out.

Money saving tips:
  • Please purchase your umbrellas and rain coats prior to visiting the theme parks.  The charge for these inexpensive items is very high in these locations
  • When traveling here, purchase hurricane / natural disaster protection. The downside to living in such a great area is that occassionally we get nasty weather punches.  Not often, but protect your investment in case it happens when you are coming to see us.

The above covers about everything.  If you do the above, you will avoid the common pitfalls of vacationing in the metro Orlando area.  Oh, one last bit of advice - enjoy yourself!  This is a great area and we have lots to offer!
