The general consensus on the web has been that Knol is by all appearances lined up to be a Wikipedia killer. Wikipedia has a strong community behind it and perhaps Wikipedia has less to lose in comparison to other writing networks out there such as About.com, Suite101.com, and Helium.com. These smaller writing networks have very similar payment models and have enjoyed a lot of time without a competitor the size of Google. If there is a good penny to be had through Knol it seems likely smaller writing networks will loose writers to Google's new venture as well as page views as knol results start competing with their content.
What Knol will bring to the web remains fairly uncertain. The quality model leaves a lot to be desired and a lot of people are concerned that search engine results will suffer as Knol results mysteriously find their way to the top of listings leaving less space for independent sites. There is also no essence of a community behind Knol, although it is a bit early to tell, at present their is the feeling that Knol is place for random people to write as if they know what they are talking about - such as myself.
The writing networks mentioned above have strict measures for quality control and many eyes are out to see if Knol doesn't just become a spammer's paradise and a plagiarizing backwater with people out to make a quick buck. Knol has a viewer rating system and content flagging system. It's seems difficult with only these 2 tools to make sure the quality of each and every Knol is a quality item. It looks like only time will tell.
