Acne misconceptions

Lack of physical exercise or sexual activity causes or worsens acne.

The truth: At the time of this writing, no clear connection has been found between acne and physical activity or sexual relations.

Acne goes away by itself in time.

The truth: acne can last for years after adolescence, and there are many adults who suffer from it. 

Acne is caused by eating “unhealthy food.”

The truth: Despite the fact that in most cases improper diet does not cause acne, there are dermatologists and researchers who believe that eating large quantities of greasy foods and snacks and spicy food can worsen the condition.

Strong soap should be used frequently to dry acne pustules.

The truth: Skin which has been affected by acne is generally sensitive and irritated. Therefore, it should be washed with mild soap no more frequently than twice a day.

Extracting blackheads and whiteheads will prevent acne.

The truth: While it is true that professional extraction of comedos (blackheads) by a cosmetician will prevent the development of some of the pustules, it is only a temporary and partial treatment. It is preferable to use the correct ointments and lotions and sometimes to take antibiotics, which are more efficient in preventing acne pustules.

Squeezing the pustules will get rid of them.

The truth: Squeezing the pustules forces the inflamed sebaceous gland deeper into the skin and increases the risk of scarring.

Extended exposure to sunlight can cure acne.

The truth: While it is true that monitored exposure to sunlight can improve acne, the improvement will be short-lived and cumulative exposure will cause irreversible damage to the skin.
